Overview

This is a favourite game for all word-lovers! Left click with the mouse to select letters to spell words and then right click to confirm the word. There are more than 36,000 words to choose from!

Logging in

If you are a Playray user, log in with your nickname to start playing right away.

If you haven’t become a Playray user yet, you will be assigned a random visitor nickname. A wavy line (~) will appear before your visitor nickname to inform other players that you are a visiting player. This way we can ensure that you won’t be confused with regular players who may share a similar nickname.

Starting the Game

To start the game click the “Start Game” button in the bottom right hand corner.

Playing

The purpose of the game is to form words from letters that are next to each other on the screen. Choose the letters by left clicking them with the mouse. When you have chosen all the letters for your word, right click with the mouse or press the space bar to confirm your word. If your word is accepted, the letters you used will disappear. The letters from above will drop down to fill the empty spaces left behind, and new letters will appear at the top of the screen. When you have successfully formed 10 words you will enter the next level, in which the identifiable words are more difficult to come by and there is less time to form words.

The game ends if you can’t form a word within the given time. The game clock is displayed on the lower right hand side of the screen along with your total points, the number of words formed, and the level you are currently playing..

The game accepts base forms of words (for example “play” but not “plays”), and many known proper nouns, but does not accept plural forms. Words can be 2-20 characters in length and there are over 36,000 accepted words.

Getting Points

The points awarded for each word are calculated by adding the value of each letter used together and then multiplying the sum by the number of letters in the word. For example, the word “tiger” would be calculated as (2+1+4+1+1) x 5 = 45 points. The chosen letters, the total value of the letters, the length of the word, and the value of the word are displayed in the top right corner of the screen. (The most valuable words formed in this game up till now can be seen here.)

Once you have completed the first level, golden or silver letters may appear from time to time. These letters can be used to form words as normal, but using these letters will increase the point value of the word. A silver letter doubles the word points and a golden letter will triple the points. For example, the word “tiger” spelt with a silver letter “T” and a golden letter “R” would make the word worth 270 points (45 x 2 x 3) instead of the usual 45 points. (The most valuable words formed in this game up till now can be found here.)

Additional Functions

Animations (default setting "on")
This option lets you choose if the disappearing, falling and appearing letters are animated, or if everything happens in a split second. The game looks better with the animations, but the animations may function slowly on some very old computers. The animations don't, however, consume the time reserved for word formation. The other option box,

Value of Letters (default setting "off")
allows you to choose whether or not the value of each letter is displayed next to the letters in the game area.

Quitting the Game:

To Quit the game simply click the “Quit” button in the bottom right corner.
